Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit
macOS 13 Ventura or newer
Install on Android in 4 steps
-
Download the file
Chrome may ask if you’re sure. Tap “Download anyway”.
-
Open the file and allow the install
If the phone asks to allow installs from your browser or Telegram, turn it on and go back.
-
Tap “Install anyway”
Play Protect may say the app was blocked to protect your device. The “Install anyway” link is above the OK button; if you don’t see it, tap “More details” first.
Play Protect shows this for apps from outside Google Play. Spanghew asks for little: internet, VPN, notifications, and the camera — only to scan a QR code.
-
Add your subscription
Copy your subscription link, open Spanghew and tap “Paste link”.
Install on Windows in 4 steps
-
Download the installer
Your browser may warn that this file isn’t commonly downloaded. Choose “Keep”.
-
Run it
Windows shows a blue “Windows protected your PC” window. Click “More info”, then “Run anyway”.
Windows shows this for programs not yet signed with a developer certificate — signing is coming in a future version. If there’s no such button and Windows mentions Smart App Control, Spanghew won’t run on this PC yet.
-
Allow changes — “Yes”
The installer sets up the service that keeps the connection running, so Windows asks for permission.
-
Add your subscription
Copy your subscription link, open Spanghew and click “Paste link”.
Install on Mac in 4 steps
-
Drag Spanghew to Applications
Open the downloaded file — a window with Spanghew and the Applications folder appears. Drag the icon onto the folder.
Run Spanghew from Applications, not from this window: macOS won’t let it connect from there.
-
Open Spanghew — “Open”
Open Spanghew from Applications or Launchpad. macOS asks whether to open an app from the Internet — click “Open”.
Spanghew is signed with a developer certificate and checked by Apple, so this is all macOS asks.
-
Add your subscription
Copy your subscription link and click “Paste link” in Spanghew.
-
Click “Connect” and allow the VPN
The first time, macOS asks about a network extension: click “Open System Settings” and turn Spanghew on under Network Extensions. Then click “Connect” again and “Allow” the VPN configuration.
You only do this once. macOS may ask for your Mac password or Touch ID. On macOS 13 and 14 the extension is allowed in Privacy & Security with the “Allow” button.
Updating
Android: Spanghew shows “Version … is available” itself — tap “Update” and it downloads and installs it. If that fails, download the new version here and install it over the old one: your subscription and settings stay.
iPhone: Spanghew shows “Version … is available” itself — tap “Update”. If it doesn’t, tap “Install on iPhone” here again. The new version installs over the old one, your subscription and settings stay.
Windows: Spanghew checks for updates itself and shows an “Update” button.
Mac: Spanghew checks for updates itself and shows an “Update” button. From version 1.0.13, update by hand once: quit Spanghew (menu bar icon → “Quit”), download the new version here and drag it to Applications, replacing the old one — your subscription and settings stay.
What the app sends on errors
When Spanghew crashes or can’t connect, it sends a short report to the developers. That’s how we find bugs on devices we don’t have.
What a report has
- the error text and where in the code it happened;
- Spanghew version, device model and system version;
- a random install number — to tell whether reports come from one device. It isn’t linked to your subscription.
What it doesn’t have
- your subscription link;
- server addresses, IP addresses or websites;
- email or device ID.
The app removes them before sending.
The log is sent only when you tap “Send log” yourself (Settings → Log). Addresses and links are removed from it too.
Turn reports off: Settings → “Send error reports”.
Check the file (SHA-256)
If it matches, the file wasn’t swapped on the way.
